Mommy Monday: Rachel Stricklin...

8:00 AM

Dearest Friends,

One of the amazing things about Instagram is the people you meet. I quickly connected with Rachel over nontoxic beauty (She's a consultant for Beautycounter!), motherhood, and healthy eating. I highly recommend following Rachel on Instagram for a daily dose of adorable kids, nutritious meal ideas, and beauty tutorials.

In her own words... A natural-born introvert, nothing has stretched me more than having children who talk all day and moving eight times over ten years. Amidst all the shuffling pieces, I've discovered my artistic side. I worked as a portrait photographer for almost a decade and thanks to Instagram, it has given me that artistic outlet again. As well as fostering some very meaningful friendships.

q your ideal food day

My ideal food day would include eating just ONE meal hot! haha Just keeping it raw and real, I mostly eat in small spurts while standing up like a horse over its trough.  But in reality, I love love love to eat fresh veggies and so my ideal food day has to include avocado.  Fresh guacamole, in fact.  I don't mind making it if someone else will do clean up! I would also have to end the day with strawberry shortcake and homemade ice cream.  We just got an ice cream maker and it's been rockin' our world.

Q HOW DO YOU BALANCE A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE WHILE BEING A BUSY MOMMY?

Balance is a word I'll never master...but I do try to practice it and be kind to myself when things fall through the cracks, as the inevitably do.  One of the main practices I have done that has really changed everything is that I wake up and work out first thing.  It doesn't matter what it is -- hiit, a walk, yoga, etc -- it's taking that hour to get up before anyone else and really just BE.  I'm a part of the Tone it Up community so those ladies keep me accountable.  I've also practiced yoga with Kristin McGee's workouts for years and they are my absolute favorite.  She does a beautiful job of teaching!  So that starts my day off in a calmer place and also gets my endorphins going!  The other practice I've incorporated is prepping food.  This has saved me SO MUCH time in the kitchen.  I thought it would be the opposite since you have to dedicate a time slot to the actual prepping, but it's been a huge relief to know a bulk of the work is done and cleaner options are right there at my fingertips, easily accessible.

Q WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO RECIPE FOR DINNER IN FIFTEEN MINUTES?

Breakfast for dinner!  It's a Thursday night tradition at our house but it's also just a general staple we can rely on when we may not be freshly stocked with ingredients.   We can typically count on being able to whip together a delicious breakfast for dinner spread.  Plus, my kids gobble it up every time!

Q WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO AN EXPECTING MOTHER

Prepare your heart.  It's about to grow larger than you ever knew it could.  Focus on the good things to come, not the concerns or worries others will express to you.  The days are indeed long, but the work you will do from sunrise to sunset is worthy work...it matters.  You are shepherding little souls.

Q WHAT ARE YOUR MORNING AND NIGHTLY BEAUTY RITUALS

Morning ritual : EYE CREAM!  Say it with me, mamas!  I used to say I'd never use one but now I use it every morning.  I use Beautycounter's Rejuvenating Eye Cream and my puffiness is immediately gone and dark circles are diminished.  I also use Beautycounter Dew Skin every day because sunscreen is super important to me!  Next I do my Beautycounter makeup in about 3-5 minutes and apply some oils that help me to breathe deeper (lately I've been enjoying Balance by DoTerra).  For nighttime, I alternate face wash and will use Dr. Ohhira's Probiotic Bar/Beautycounter's Rejuvenating Face Wash to get my makeup off and then take time massaging my homemade face balm (which I lovingly refer to as The Calm Balm) and just breathe that in as it melts into my skin.  Next, I put on my Beautycounter Peppermint Lip Balm and Baby Balm on the backs of my dry hands (where we live in Colorado is like an elevated desert!) And this is strange...but I look forward to brushing my teeth!!  I've found 2 amazing products that clean like crazy and leave me feeling perfectly fresh : Nimbus Toothbrush + Dr. Lina Garcia's Holistic Toothpaste.  Am I a total grandma for making my teeth-brushing activity a highlight of my day?!

Q SINCE BECOMING A MOTHER, HOW HAS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH FOOD CHANGED?

I definitely care more about it now, for sure.  Before it was all about gratification -- often gained from sugar.  Now it's more about nourishment, being aware of the long term effects of small choice we make today and putting effort into making real food FUN for my kids.  I let my children bake with me and let me just say they make a HUGE mess.  But I do this because I want them to feel empowered that they can nourish their bodies and that the process of making things with their hands can be therapeutic.

Q NAME YOUR FIVE HEALTHY LIVING MUST HAVES

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar : easy to find, cheap, does a multitude of things!  It's amazing at kicking colds in their rear.  My kids will also consume it if I mix it with lemon and raw local honey.
  2. Essential Oils : These have been really key for us and keeping our kids protected against seasonal distress and they help me to take a moment to just breathe.  I love Blue Tansy, any wood oil for grounding, and my daughter's favorites are Lavender and Grapefruit.
  3. Coconut Butter : I can't go a day without it!  It's such a great hit of the GOOD fats and also tastes like an amazing dessert.  I love Nikki's Coconut Butter - best ever.
  4. Beautycounter's Entire Line : Yes I work as a consultant for them, but I'm a fan first and foremost!  We just enjoy being able to buy all of our personal care products in one place -- trusting that they'll actual work and that every single ingredient has been tested for safety.  It's one thing I no longer have to worry about!
  5. Food Processor : I turned 30 last year and this was what I wanted for my birthday...my husband was like, no way that cannot be what you request for your birthday.  But I tell you what, it's been the best gift!  It makes healthy cooking a breeze and has allowed me to make my own nut butters, pie crusts, shred veggies, etc.  It's my little workhorse!
